Moving Guide: Make Your Move Less Stressful
San Felipe Storage is here to help make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible. Organizing and preparing weeks ahead of your move will reduce your stress and decrease the chances of overlooking important items. Follow this comprehensive moving guide to ensure a successful transition.

6-8 Weeks Before Moving
This is a great time to begin planning the details of your move:
Item Inventory: Make a list of items to move to your new home and those for storage. Separate items to be handled by movers and those you'll handle. Dispose of unneeded items and consider a garage sale if you have time.
Get Moving Estimates: Obtain estimates from several moving companies.
Select a Moving Company: Research and choose a professional moving company. Discuss costs, packing, timing, and other details.
Keep Records: Many moving expenses are tax-deductible. Keep a file with important information and receipts for moving-related expenses.
Learn About Your New Community: Find out about schools, parks, recreation, and community programs from the local Chamber of Commerce or Visitor's Bureau.
Transfer Insurance: Transfer medical, property, fire, and auto insurance through your agent.
Secure Medical Records: Place all medical records in a safe place, including prescriptions, vaccination records, and other important information.

4-5 Weeks Before Moving
Collect Packing Supplies: Start collecting moving and packing supplies, which can be purchased from your self-storage or moving company.
Change of Address: Fill out a US postal change of address form and notify your new address to your telephone company, trash company, cable/satellite, water, electric company, internet provider, insurance companies, banks, financial institutions, clubs, local government agencies, and any other utility companies.
Register Kids in New Schools: Register your children in their new schools and involve them in the moving process by having them pack their toys and items.
Contact Utility Companies: Arrange for disconnection of utilities after your move-out date and call ahead to have utilities connected at your new home.
Plan for Pets: Arrange transportation for pets and check specific requirements for pet ownership in your new township. Obtain veterinarian records.

2-4 Weeks Before Moving
Arrange Childcare: Arrange for a babysitter on moving day to keep young children safe during the loading process.
Return Borrowed Items: Return library books and any borrowed items. Collect items you have loaned out.
Pack Valuables Separately: Do not pack valuables in the moving van; take them with you.
Check Plant Laws: Some state laws do not allow moving house plants. Consider giving plants to friends or local charities.
Service Your Car: If traveling by car, get it serviced before departure.
Start Packing: Pack items you don't currently need. Determine which items go to storage and which go to your new home.
Clear Out Everything: Don't forget items in basements, attics, closets, and safety deposit boxes.
Back-Up Computer Files: Disassemble your computer and back up important files. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.
Dispose of Hazardous Items: Dispose of inflammable items like fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, acids, chemistry sets, and other hazardous items.

1 Week Before Moving
Label Items Clearly: Label items as 'fragile', 'load first', 'load last', and 'do not load' to ensure their safety.
Confirm Details with Movers: Ensure your moving company has the correct address and phone number for your new home. Provide an alternate contact number if needed.
Prepare Refrigerator: Empty, defrost, and clean your refrigerator at least a day before moving.
Plan for Delays: Make flexible plans and arrangements in case of delays. Confirm travel arrangements and keep necessary items accessible.
Pack Essentials Separately: Pack a separate box with essentials for immediate use upon arrival at your new home, such as snacks, disposable plates, cups, bathroom items, and trash bags.

Moving Out Day
Final Check: Thoroughly check closets, drawers, shelves, attics, and garages to ensure nothing is left behind.
Turn Off and Lock: Turn off all switches and lock all doors and windows.
Supervise Loading: Be present during the loading process to ensure nothing is left behind.
Provide Directions: Ensure someone is there to direct the movers. The driver should have your contact information and the destination agent's details.
Be Patient: Be patient if you arrive before your movers.
Sign Off: Sign the bill of lading and ensure your new address and phone number are correct.
Move-In Day and After
While unloading, check for any damage or missing items. Ensure utilities are connected. Carry traveler’s checks or cash for quick payments. Plan the placement of major items in your new home. If moving to a new state, renew your driver’s license and update your will and other legal papers. Locate nearby hospitals, police stations, and fire stations.
