When you move to Mexico, you are allowed a one time exemption from paying
the 20% import duty on the value of your goods. However there are a
myriad of requirements that must be met first. You need a complete inventory
of your goods in both English and in Spanish, and it needs to be formatted
properly. Then there are the import licenses and customs clearance documents
that must be completed and filed and approved. There are a number of
exceptions to the exemption, for example if you have new appliances,
they are not exempt. There can also be problems with the transportation
because the trucker needs to be licensed in two countries, or you need
to unload at the border and change trucks.
